On 25 August 2014, two boaters went out down the Niagara river but their boat ran into technical issues and drifted down the river into the restricted zone where boats or motor vehicles are prohibited! Their boat was not working and they had no way out. They managed to anchor themselves somehow so the boat doesn’t drift even further and put them in even more danger. A rescue attempt was made that morning when a rescue boat was sent to intervene. However the 2 boaters were stuck in a shallow area and the rescue boat had no chance of getting to them, it retreated. Another smaller rescue boat was dispatched to make a second attempt but it was not successful in rescuing the stranded boaters on the Niagara River since the currents were too strong and it could have put them in danger as well. Finally a helicopter was sent from the US Niagara Falls to attempt the third rescue from the air. This time the attempt was a success and both boaters were rescued unharmed. Their boat was retrieved as well and was not damaged either. The air rescue crew was very proud and pleased that their hard work and training has paid off.
Instead of going for a boat ride down the niagara river by yourself or with a pal, we recommend taking a Niagara Falls Day Tour to check out the great attractions that Niagara has to offer on land and on water. The maid of the Mist boat ride that is available at Niagara Falls is a great way to get up close and personal with the massive and marvellous falls. You will get wet, and you will feel the sheer power of nature as you look at the falls from a secure boat, right in front of the falls. Niagara Falls Day Tours from Toronto are available all year round and are very affordable. With Niagara Falls Day Tours from Toronto you can visit the falls, and go on the Maid of the Mist boat ride for as little as $69. We would like to alert anyone who decides to go boating down the Niagara river to think twice and to be extra careful. This is not the first time Canadians or Americans had to be rescued by air in Niagara Falls as this area is notorious for boat issues and deaths by drowning. The Niagara river currents are extremely strong and un-predictive so extra caution has to be taken when in the water, on boat or swimming.
